Back to the Brushes 361

An update on the Early Imperial Roman legions from Corvus Belli. The figures with shields attached are Ultracast from Plastic Soldier Company and the unshielded figures are metals from Corvus Belli.

The colour for the lorica segmenta is Army Painter Platemail and this was used the undercoat by spraying. It is a first time painting this method and so far all good.

More updates to follow in 2023.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 360

First session for this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge XIII sees the base flesh painted on the first three rows of figures below. The rear rows  - excluding the command stand on the left of screen - have been painted before the start date and will not be included in the tally towards my Challenge points.

The figures are mostly Corvus Belle scuplts with both PSC Ultracasts and metals in the mix. The command figures are a mix of both 3D print and metal casts.

Tomorrow night's session will see the armour and tunics taking colour after some searches for Batavian colour schemes for Early Imperial Roman auxilia.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 359

RayR's recent post made me have a look at the calendar and realise that AHPC XIIII is 6 days away and I haven't started the ritual tidying of the hobby desk. The picture below shows the daily carnage that I call a hobby desk and a poor attempt has been made to start the tidy up.

More pictures to follow over the weekend - time allowing - including some of the prep work started for this year's challenge including:

  • 28mm Republican Romans for SAGA: Age of Hannibal
  • 28mm Carthaginians for SAGA: Age of Hannibal
  • 28mm Late Romans
  • 15mm Early Imperial Romans for ADLG
  • 15mm Arabs for ADLG
  • 15mm Thracians for DBA and ADLG
  • 15mm Wars of the Roses for ADLG
  • 6mm Punic and Macedonian Wars for Age of Hannibal (LittleWarsTV) and DBA
Looking forward to the off and following everyone's progress in paint.

Cheers for now,
Ross

Back to the Brushes 358

Strictly speaking, no brushes have been used for these figures at this point.

Swiss files, scapels and PVA to mount them on painting bases or grab adhesive for the 25mm rounds, yes. Brushes no.

Rattle can session planned for the weekend all being well.

As you will also note, no painting as distracted by prepping for the winter months.

Should manage a few figures over the next week, but not sure if it will be anywhere near thirty.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 357

After sorting the broken shields and spears the Thracians are back on the painting table.

More to follow sooner rather than later.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 356

Scenes from a game of ADLG last night as Sparta and their Thracian allies (in gray) failed to stop Hannibal and his elephants.

To further crush the fighting spirit of the Spartans the evening ended with a crash, bang, wallop! 29 shields and 19 spears to be reglued into place.

It is every gamers' nightmare and on reflection could have been far worse.

Cheers for now.

30 Days 30 miniatures - November 2022

For the 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge there is no theme to this, just to paint and complete 30 miniatures regardless of their starting condition or size.

The outline of the challenge is detailed below, however the main point being to have fun with your hobby.

  • To paint 30 figures of all shapes and sizes in 30 days
  • The figures can be partly painted at the start as the main point is to complete figures that have been forgotten
  • Basing is not necessary to count as completed
  • Any scale is good
  • Too have fun
  • The end date is set by your start date - 30th November will be the end date of this challenge
  • To post updates as often as possible
  • Lastly to show a roundup post with a group picture of everything.

Hope that you will find this interesting.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 355

The final stand of Crossbowmen and Spearmen for the Late Crusaders in ADLG.

Strangely, for figures packed in eights, ran out of spear armed knights and substituted in the mace armed figure that you see in the pictures. The head on that mace is as big as the heads of the crossbowmen in the rear rank 😀 Scale creep is everywhere...

For this army there will be some mounted sergeants coming along shortly alongside more crossbowmen. This time the crossbows won't have any spearmen to add in.

This takes the tally this month to:

32 x 15mm infantry figures

Giving that the young Padawan is guising tomorrow night, there won't likely be any additions until next month. You never though...

Cheers for now

Wednesday 19 October 2022

Back to the Brushes 354

The next stand of combined spearmen and crossbowmen for the Late Crusaders under Lionhearts strategic leadership are below:

The figures as with the bulk of  the army are from Gladiator Miniatures available through Fighting 15s.

The shield decals are from VVV and provide a quick and relatively easy way of upgrading the overall appearance of the unit.

The base from Warbases is a 40mm square on 2mm and awaits the traditional black edge.

This takes the tally for this month's 30 Days 30 Miniatures to:

24 x 15mm infantry

Still time to get some more on the painting table

Cheers for now

Wednesday 12 October 2022

Back to the Brushes 353

A few of items currently on the painting table at present.

The second part of Black Guard spearmen for Almorahads in ADLG with first two stands very nearly finished.

A unit of medium Turkopol cavalry for the Late Crusaders in ADLG

A classic figure from Citadel Miniatures back in the day; a Viking from the Kremlo scenario

The start of the first unit for Republican Romans in SAGA: Age of Hannibal. Figures from Gripping Beast.

Some completed figures to follow shortly.

Cheers for now.

Tuesday 4 October 2022

Back to the Brushes 352

Starting of October with the last of September:

The three stands shown include twelve spearmen and four crossbowmen painted as part of the ongoing Late Crusaders army for ADLG and DBA.

The spearmen with the red and white shields may be repurposed as purely spearmen rather than mixed with crossbows. This will allow more variety in the army with the mixed spear/crossbow having more spearmen support.

Total for this month starts at

15mm Infantry x 16 figures

Cheers for now

30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge - October 2022

Last month's 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge may appear to have fallen short of the mark, however, that was down to poor planning between painting and blogging.

This month will start strong and finish stronger...

For the 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge there is no theme to this, just to paint and complete 30 miniatures regardless of their starting condition or size.

The outline of the challenge is detailed below, however the main point being to have fun with your hobby.

Back to the Brushes 351

This month has flown in and whilst there have been no posts to date some paint has been moved about a bit.

The first entry for this month shows the start of a 28mm British force for Chain of Command in Italy. The figures are from Warlord Games and are based on the standard rifle platoon for that campaign:

Platoon Headquarters

Lt with SMG - painted

Platoon Sarg with SMG - painted

PIAT Team with 2 crew

2" mortar Team with 2 crew

Sections one to three

Corporal with either SMG or rifle - one painted

Rifle Team - Six riflemen

LMG Team - Bren Gun with three crew

From left to right - Forward Observer, Bren Gunner, Lt with SMG, Corporal with Rifle

This takes the total this month to:

4 x 28mm infantry

There will be a few more pics to follow tomorrow and the night after all bein gwell.

Cheers for now.

30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge September 2022

The first of 2022 has been completed and the bench mark has been set at 31 miniatures.

For the 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge there is no theme to this, just to paint and complete 30 miniatures regardless of their starting condition or size.

The outline of the challenge is detailed below, however the main point being to have fun with your hobby.

Back to the Brushes 350

As September starts here is the last of August's 30 days painting challenge.

An Arab horde from Old Glory in 15mm.

A small piece of terrain for desert themed games in either 6 or 10mm - this started life as a Warbases pond base in 2mm MDF.

The rear rank of crossbowmen from Gladiator Miniatures complete the first two stands or half spear hald crossbow for the Late Crusaders in ADLG.

What the crows see at the start of the bloody day.

The start of the next half and half unit, alas the spearmen didn't make August's muster.

This completes August's 30 Days 30 Miniatures and the final tally is:

27 x 15mm Infantry
1 x 15mm Elephant and crew
2 x 28mm Infantry
1 x 10mm terrain piece

Totalling 31 painted miniatures.

Will be starting the next challenge tomorrow night.

Cheers for now.

Tuesday 30 August 2022

Back to the Brushes 349

Another addition to the army that is never finished: the Late Romans.

This time a stand of Light Infantry archers for ADLG or whatever in 28mm.

The figures are Gripping Beast's Romano Brits and paint well although the posing is somewhat static.

This takes the total so far this month to:

8 x 15mm Infantry
1 x 15mm Elephant and crew
2 x 28mm Infantry

There is still one night to paint on and there are a few bits sitting to be photographed that will help with the numbers.

Cheers for now.

Tuesday 23 August 2022

How Far Jerusalem 6

Another figure completed last night and the basing will be done over the next few days.
This elephant from Museum Miniatures will be used in a variety of different Arab and their successor armies in ADLG and DBA.

A hefty piece of lead, if dropped this would smart a bit if it landed on your foot. Hoping not to find out at any point in the future,

Sadly, this only counts as one for this month's challenge taking the tally so far to:

8 x 15mm Infantry
1 x 15mm Elephant and crew

More to follow shortly.

Cheers for now

Thursday 18 August 2022

Back to the Brushes 348

A reasonable session last night moved these crossbowmen on to waiting on a wash of strong tone to finish them off.

The spearmen have been sitting ready since the beginning of August to be based with these.

That's all for today and looking to go back to the first amongst equals of armies here for a brief interlude with 28mm ancients. As the hobbit said, don't adventures ever end, well this one isn't done yet for sure.

Cheers for now

Wednesday 17 August 2022

Dance of Bronze 26

Finished these off last night as aware that the month is rapidly moving towards the last third and there is nothing as yet completed.

The figures are from Xyston's range of Greeks and will be used in, well, you guessed it, Greek armies for DBA and ADLG.

Xyston's figures are not to everyone's taste however, I really like them and find the sculpts suit my style of painting for 15mm.

Back to the Crusaders this evening to progress another combined stand of spear and crossbows for ADLG.

This takes this month's total to:

8 x 15mm infantry.

Cheers for now
