Back to the Brushes 146

Some pictures of the preparation that has been ongoing over the last few weeks for the Painting Challenge

The chaos before and after a dust and tidy up. A solitary elf stands central on the painting table waiting to be finished during the early days of the Challenge.

Below are some of the figures that have been prepped for the challenge and the running list is below

  • 10 28mm Retro Chaos Warriors from Citadel circa 1982-4
  • 8 28mm Ninjas from Dixon Miniatures
  • 48 15mm Skeletons from Alternative Armies
  • 6 28mm Peltasts from Foundry - not shown
  • 36 28mm Trojans from Redoubt
The figures above that show colour rather than undercoat have been re-base coated to fit with the rules of the Challenge.

To finish here is some nostalgia from Marillion

Great song,  not so sure about the flaming suit though Fish..... clearly clothes in the late eighties were worse than I remember.

C Beams Glitter in the Dark 5

These appear to have been missed after being shown in the AHPC VII, so catching up with them now.

Figures are Heavy Plasma cannons from Ground Zero Games New Israeli 15mm Marines range. As with all of this range they are well sculpted and paint well.

Hoping to start showing some new work progress in the near future.

Cheers for now

Fantasy Heroes 3

Some recently finished Rangers from this year's Analogue Painting Challenge. From left to right, a Citadel Ranger of Ithilien, Lone Wolf and an AD&; ranger. All from the early and mid eighties.

When times allows the remaining figures from the Rangers of Ithilien and AD&D sets will be completed as they are partially painted at present.

A beginning is a very delicate time.

Know then that it is the day before the 6th Analogue Painting Challenge begins and the preparatory work is complete. The brushes are primed and the painters are in the starting blocks. In the picture below lies the target for the next 3 months - a 28mm Basic Impetus Macedonian army.

The army comprises of the following:

15 cavalry figures - 1 x CP 6 Companions, 1 x CM 5 Thessalian and 1 x CL 4 Prodromoi
42 infantry figures - 2 x FP 12 phalangites, 1 x FL 8 hypaspists, 1 x FL 6 peltasts and  2 x  S 2  skirmishers.

The horses for the Companions are not shown here as they are still drying having been re-undercoated last night.

Now, nearly everything is starting off in the traditional black undercoat except that is a some of the peltasts that have been undercoated in a flesh base colour. Not sure how this will work out so will keep you posted on the results of this little experiment and the reasons why throughout the challenge.

In terms of points this lot will total 360 points if completed which is higher than the entry level posted for the challenge. Time will see how this fares.

Thats all for now

Cheers

Blood and Souls for my Lord Arioch 3

As recently posted on Analogue Painting Challenge here are five more retro Citadel figures for Songs of Blades and Heroes.

A High Sorcerer of Chaos from CO2 as shown in Citadel Compendium Two.

Rackhir the Red, or at least an artistic impression of him for the Chaos warband. Although not strictly correct for a Warrior Preist of Phum - he is not monotone in red - the yellow ochre lifts the red and gold that has been used on other parts of the figure.

The next three figures are the back bone of the warband and are all from the Citadel Compendium Two's listing of Chaos Warriors.

With these three figures the emphasis has been on their arms and armour, key elements in the figures sculpts. The character of these sculpts sets them apart - personal opinion - from their modern counter parts.

There will be more from this range in the coming weeks.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 101

A brief update on the progress of several different projects that are in different stages. Sadly no pictures as the camera hadn't charged properly. Hopefully just operator error there.

The next three "cats" for the WW2 Germans are nearing completion with the final dry brushing, decals and varnishing still to do.

A number of Citadel Chaos Warriors are completed and waiting on final pictures being taken for entry into the Analogue Painting Challenge.

The Uruk Hai have stalled but will hopefully be on track for completion before the deadline.

Dropship troopers for Critical Mass have also stalled, however will be back to these this week. This will hopefully allow the Augmented Troopers time to be started and completed, again before the deadline.

Moving along well with the first of the 6mm Macedonians and Greeks with the skirmish line nearly completed. These are the same as the Chaos Warriors and only require pictures.

Will post some work in progress pictures once the camera charges.

Back to the Brushes 99

A quick update on the painting progress at present - apologies for the lousy pictures. As has been the norm over the last couple of months a couple of different periods and scales have been getting worked on at the same time.

First up is another retro Chaos Warrior from Citadel. Bags of character here, although the pic really doesn't show it.

Next up are four AFV from Britannia Miniatures. These will be worked on over the weekend taking the total of completed 1/72 scale vehicles for WW2 waiting to be shown for the Analogue Painting Challenge to nine. There hasn't been an afternoon when the natural light has been good enough to take a range of pictures - as these quick work in progress pictures clearly show.

Last up are - although you may struggle to work out the 28mm figures - Uruk Hai from Games Workshop's LOTR range and 6mm from Rapier Miniatures. The Uruk are to complete a warband started just after the release of the Fellowship of the Ring and the 6mm are this year's major project.

There will be more to follow soon as well as some finished items from a while back.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 98

Here are a few work in progress pictures of a variety of different items that are being worked on at present:

First up is a command stand and three attack drone stands for Critical Mass. The figures are all from Ground Zero and will hopefully all be completed this coming weekend. These will be used in a supporting role in Critical Mass and have been a sod to glue into place; hence why there are still three to do.

Next are two Chaos Warriors for the growing Songs of Blades and Heroes warband. One figure is being painted in tribute to Rackhir the Red from the Elric Sagas, can you work out which one?

Next up are two roguish types from Otherworld Miniatures, the left hand figure as viewed will be making his way to Canada when completed.

Below is a Hertzer - Jagdpanzer 38 - tank destroyer again from Britannia Miniatures which should also be finished by this weekend.

Some 6mm figures from Baccus that will be making an appearance throughout 2015. These will be used eventually for Command and Colours and L'Art de la Guerre.

The last three pictures show the two places that all of this painting gets done. Apologies for the state of both.

Above is the folding table paint station that allows regular progress to be made throughout the year. As you can see there is not much room so the paints are all stacked in toolboxes at the side of the table when its in use as shown below.

Foundry Paints

The picture below is the actual painting desk in the study - again in need of a right good tidy up. The close up below show a unit of five Huns that will be getting painted in the next few months, their leader having been painted for several years now. The figures are from Gripping Beast and will be used in Impetus.

Bottom centre are three WW2 German Vehicles still wrapped

Now after all that chat about painting its time to go and actually do some.

Cheers for now.
