Fantasy Heroine 23

Dark Elves or Drow call them what you will, they have always been a favourite source of adversary in fantasy skirmish and roleplaying games here. This figure is a first purchase from a new range - Reaper Bones Black. Sold as a Dark Elf Priestess, the figure fits the generic image of this perfectly with a mixture of armour and robes. The mace and skull finishing the look of a dark priestess of Lolth.

Had great fun painting this figure as an entry for the  AHPC XI and the limited choice of colours really helped focus on the painting.

Three very scary ladies that are currently gracing the painting table. 

The figures in black undercoat are from the classic range of Citadel pre-slotta CO9 Dark Elves. The central figure comes from Reaper Miniatures Bones range. 

These will make a change from the Ancients that are currently being worked on and give an opportunity for a little trip down memory lane; the Drow have always been a firm favourite from roleplaying games.

Another set of pictures of figures painted pre challenge that have recently been fully based. This time the theme is Clerics and Paladins. All figures are 28mm in scale and are from Grenadier, Ral Partha and Reaper.

As the Painting Challenge fast approaches trying to get a few figures finished before moving on to new themes for the duration of the Challenge.

These three heavily armoured figures have been a bit of a challenge in their own right, especially the figure with the mace. The cloak on this chap has been black, yellow ochre, black, purple, black, bottle green and then black again. After leaving the figure in the corner so to speak have finally decided that black works best with the tones in the armour. Well at least it won't need another base coat this time.

The other two figures from Grenadier had issues with the armour and washes. The blue/black mix wasn't right and after another two coats of Nuln Oil finally seemed to work. Only the hair and plumage to finish and these are for basing.

Layering metallics gives a good result and is very different than straight dry brushing the colours up and picking out highlights. Dry brushing is still champion if there are large amounts of chainmail although this can be picked out with wet brushing if very careful.

Hopeful to get these completed over the next few nights

Sometimes the colours that you think that will work well together just don't sit well. The juxtaposition is well just wrong. This is an example of this

The ochre for the cloak just doesn't sit well with all that polished steel. Any suggestions? Black - too obvious, blue might work, white  could be too clean and red, well that's been done before at some point in history.

Back to the Brushes 115

A couple of work in progress shots quickly taken this morning.

First up a Foundry Norman that is very near completion and to his left the Foundry Rat Catcher or Risk Taker move closer to the final colours. The far left corner shows four more Gripping Beast Vikings slowly getting coloured in; these will be for SAGA or similar.

With the Ratcatcher figure keeping to muted browns on the material as want to show the rats in blacks and greys. No real reason why it was just how the miniature started to come together.

Above is a Reaper fighter or cleric type that will be used as such in some form of fantasy based skirmish game in the future. Mostly armour on this one so hoping to finish up soon.

The start of a new fantasy warband based around clerics and paladin types. Figures from Citadel, Ral Partha, Reaper and Mirliton.

Ral Partha

Hoping to use these figures to show a bit of the painting style used. This will include painting flesh, fabric and metal, three key elements of both fantasy and historical miniatures. This warband will all be fantasy figures for a change.

Citadel

First up, starting with a black undercoat, the flesh has been blocked in foundry Conker brown B then layered with Foundry Flesh A. The pictures are flooded with natural sun light so you may have difficulty in seeing the layers clearly.

Reaper

Should point out that the undercoat is Humbrol Matt Black acrylic and is brushed on. Trying to limit the use of aerosols in hobby pursuits as well as everyday life.

Citadel and Mirliton

An old classic from Citadel with a left handed sculpt; they do exist!

Citadel

The figures are hex based as they will possibly see use in roleplay as well as skirmish games.

The last figure is the long over due Curtgeld for last year's painting challenge. A Foundry figure with some reference below.

Below is an obvious source for the inspiration of the miniature and a good reference for colours. Not sure who the original was by. The differences are clear when both the miniature and the painting are studied at the same time.
