Odds and ends

For those of you who have not yet seen the display game of Heraclea put on at Partizan, then this link is well worth a visit. A truly impressive table with a similarly impressive amount of lead on it. The figures look the part and the overall aspect of the table is what many wargamers seek in larger games. Sadly, this hasn't been seen in the flesh as Partizan is a bit out of the way.

Displays like this have you looking at the lead mountain in a different way, and suddenly lists start appearing; as do visits to the likes of Aventine Miniatures, just too see what's what you know.

On the subject of out of the way, a missed opportunity occurred several weeks ago; when due to work the following Medieval Display was missed:

The display was held at Abbot House in Dunfermline and you can just see the Abbey at the top centre of the picture. Doubly annoying was the fact that this was only two minutes from work. There are more pictures available at the Abbot House's facebook page here. Still got a good reference picture for the future.

Off to do some painting, cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 24

Due to some excellent weather there hasn't been much hobby time over the last week. Still daunted by the prospect of finishing the basing on the 15mm Napoleonics shown below:

The figures have all been based for Age of Eagles, but will also be used for Shako 2 depending on what is being played. At least in this stage they will see the table.

Each stand will have a wash in Devlan Mud or whatever it is now called before being having sand and flock glued to the base. In real terms this will be an ongoing project completed on a regiment by regiment basis, as to tackle this all in one sitting would be soul destroying to say the least.

Hopefully, there will be some more productive painting coming up soon and before the close a warm welcome to:

  • Rosbif

Hopefully, you'll find somethings of interest here and keep coming back. On that matter, thanks to all for the support in helping this blog pass it's twenty-five thousand hits. Its much appreciated here.

Cheers for now.

Imperium Sine Fine 3

Here are a few more pictures of previously painted Late Romans that have been rebased for Impetus. To be fair not sure if this will ever be used in anger but its worth including in the completed army. The figures are from Gripping Beast.

Next up will be the pictures of the completed Menapii Seniores and some work in progress pictures of the basing saga for Napoleonics.

Lastly a warm welcome to:

  • Dalauppror

Hope that you find something of interest in these pages.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 23

Here are some work in progress pictures on the Late Roman Foederatii. The figures are all from Gripping Beast's Germanic range. Have been playing around quite a bit with the figures at this stage to find a suitable basing layout and this is looking like the final draft. At present there is very little painted on the majority of the figures, but by working out the final positioning the colour scheme can be created to go around the two central figures. What the final colour scheme will be is a mystery at present.

At the this stage the priest - top left - and the dog handler - top right - are remaining on opposite sides, but that could change as the priest does look like he has just singled somebody out.

Below are two skirmishers for the next stand of javelin throwing loons that is nearly complete. The guy on the left looks like he should be on a 118 advert.

Above are three medium cavalry for the same force. The left most figure was completed a good few years back as part of the original WAB army these figures came from. Having some surprising difficulty in trying to paint the other two horses so that they match the original on the final base. Have changed the way that horses are painted over the last and am struggling to remember what was done previously. Here are few more detailed pictures of the original and the shield transfer is from Little Big Men.

Next up will be the completed stands of Late Romans.

Cheers for now

Fury of the Norse 2

The following pictures show the Warlord character for SAGA along with the last of his first hearth guard figures. Both figures are from Gripping Beast and show the differences within the Viking ranges they hold.

The main man in all his glory with his nicely painted shield, which no doubt will be re-glued in place during use.

A Little Big Men shield transfer was used to complete this hearth guard. Maybe next time this will be hand painted; then again why spend all that time when these are so good?

The pegs were painted in two stages: firstly paint the trousers as normal including full tones, in this case  from light grey to white. Then paint the contrasting colour over the base colour again allowing for shading and hight-lights. If necessary, and it was, touch up any overspills on the white.

An eager Warlord leads a more reluctant Hearth guard into the fray. The foolhardiness of youth! The choice of figures for the hearth guard has been quite deliberate as this unit is fairly static and the next will be more active in their poses. This will help for recognition on the table between the two units if both used at the same time.

The first complete hearth guard waiting for orders then following the leader and put your left arm out.

Next up will be some more finished Late Romans, some work in progress pictures of their Germanic Allies/Foes, the story so far on basing Napoleonics and if time allows this week something completely, completely different.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 22

Things have been moving along at a steady pace over the last week or so with a variety of painting being done for several ongoing projects.

There will be several pictures of several items that have been completed or will be completed early this coming week.

A lot of time has been spent rebasing a large collection of painted 15mm Napoleonics for use in both Shako 2 and Age of Eagles, but more of that later.

Cheers for now.

And now for Something Completely Different 3

Another Dwarf has been completed for the first Songs of Blades and Heroes Warband. Yes, there may be more than one, but before that here are some pictures of the newest member and his fellows

This figure again is from the Northern Dwarves range from circa 1984, way back when it all began, well at least for here.

Most probably going to re-paint the cross shield above left to match the rune patterns used on the two swordsmen. It fits better with the dwarves as a whole and gives a more uniform appeal whilst allowing for individualism as well.

Work progresses on the Menapii Seniores and there will be more Late Romans and Germanic Tribes to follow shortly.

Cheers for now.
