Fantasy Hero 25

A solitary dwarf completed in March of this year that was a part of this year's AHPC XV entries. A retro figure from the haydays of Citadel Miniatures with suitably heavy armour and sword.

The large areas of armour made this a relatively quick figure to paint and after gathering dust for far too many years finally glad he's done.

Back to the Brushes 399

It's February already; how the ... did that happen!

A couple of updates on two different things passing across the painting table just now.

Rebased 15mm Alternative Armies Undead for use in Hordes of Things. These are now all on 40mm fronted bases and will be textured, dry brushed and finished - again - shortly.

Above are a couple of very different looking Dwarves. On the left a nod to Conan the Barbarian; a beardless dwarf in a loin cloth.  The other dwarf has a much more Gothic look with armour more suited for the 15th century.

More to follow shortly.

Back to the Brushes 398

Something new, something old and something different.

Something new - SAGA: Age of Chivalry Hundred Years War from Perry Miniatures.

Something old - El Cid skirmishers in 28mm from Gripping Beast.

Something different - 25mm Dwarves for Kings of War including retro Citadel figures at the rear and Ral Partha in the fore; a glutton for punishment.

More to follow on these shortly.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 396

Already two weeks into 2025 and already behind with painting plans.

Have more partially painted miniatures on the desk than finished miniatures and more primed than partially painted. To be fair though that's not that unusual.

As it's the start of another year - it's past time for New Year greetings - here is the beginning of something new.

A base filler for Kings of War Free Dwarves Ambush force with a Troop of Ironclad Warriors at the rear.

Old Citadel figures for the above Ironclad troop and an Iron breaker at the front will give both units a definite retro look.

More to follow shortly.

Cheers for now.

Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge XV

Winter has arrived and the prep for this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is underway. Having joined the lists again I am needing to find 500 points of 2, 10, 15 and 28mm miniatures to paint between December 21st and March 21st.

Decisions are not always the easiest of things to make and can often change how the challenge runs. The initial running list includes:

  • 2mm Punic Wars
  • 10mm DAK for O Group
  • 15mm Romano Brits for ADLG
  • 15mm Samurai
  • 28mm Romano Brits for SAGA
  • 28mm Dwarves for Kings of War
  • 28mm Hundred Years War for SAGA
  • 28mm Christian Spanish

There are more options, however, I'm looking to finalise a set list and point values from the above with a schedule to ensure that there is time to complete sections across the Challenge and to keep things interesting throughout.

It was the night before

The Ninth Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge...

Every where was quiet and all over the blogosphere hands were as busy as elves preparing the Little Lead Men for the challenge.

Some of the Little Lead Men were very very little whilst others were a bit bigger but they were all shiny in the beginning. That is of course until the busy hands used the big grey and black spray clouds and covered their shiny cores up.

Soon the grey and black sprayed Little Lead Men would be brightly coloured with glorious colours so they would shine once again.

As the days lengthen after the winter Solstice follow the progress of the Little Lead Men as they follow in the footsteps of the first Little Lead Man recoloured after a long time in the darkness.

The question is; which one will be first?

Rounding up 2013

As 2013 draws to a close in sunny Scotland its a time to reflect before the Hogmanay celebrations start. The year started with the 3rd Painting challenge and progressed  from there.  A new Impetus army has been started and hopefully early next year will see the finish of another one. Several warbands have been completed and a few others started.

In summary the total of figures finished is detailed below:

  • 28mm Infantry - 88 figures
  • 28mm Cavalry - 6 figures
  • 28mm Chariot - 1 set
  • 28mm Elephant - 1 set
  • 20mm Infantry - 6 figures
  • 20mm Vehicles - 4
  • 15mm Vehicles - 17
Overall not a bad tally and hopefully something that will be improved on next year.

And Now for Something Completely Different 12

Another of the Dwarves for Songs of Blades and Heroes has been finished off this morning. An angry soul, who clearly has issues as you can see below:

The figure is from Citadel back when their models had character and were worthy of purchasing. Not a fan of the new examples of Dwarves from Games Workshop, but that is a personal opinion.

This figure almost completes the Dwarves of the Red Right Hand with only two still to paint. After these have been done its time for some of the Dwarves favourites, yes, thats right Elves.

Back to the Brushes 62

Another few pictures of the Vikings as the last stands are so nearly completed. Figures are from Gripping Beast and shield designs from Little Big Men. These transfers really are great and have lifted stands over all.

The fallen spear is glued to both hand and base in a vain attempt to ensure that it doesn't move in the future. On reflection, looking at it here it really should be point up and base down. Easily fixed at this stage of the game.

Next, a slightly smaller berserker from Citadel's Northern Dwarf range. This guy is really upset with world as he sees it and is proving great fun to paint, red daubed flesh and all.

Lastly, a warm welcome to the newest follower to this blog:
  • Chris Stoesen
Hopefully Chris, you'll find things of interest within these pages.

And Now For Something Completely Different 11

This young fellow has been hanging around the edge of the painting table for sometime now, so in between colours for Vikings and working on the first full stand for Project S here he is:

An old Citadel figure that has been brought to life again for Songs of Blades and Heroes, taking the warband into double figures now at ten. Great fun to paint and even more fun to game with.

More to follow shortly with working progress on the Vikings.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 53

Due to the excesses of the weekend very little painting was done over the last few days. Hangovers are just no longer conducive to anything that requires any form of concentration. That said managed to dig out the partially completed stand of Equites Primo Sagittarii for Impetus and here are a few pictures of their progress:

The red and white of the Equites Primo Sagittarii will be used on the equipment of the riders to add colour to these figures. The choice of colour for the clothing has been deliberate to allow the use smaller amounts of brighter colours for detail.

The horses are finished and over the next few days so will the riders be, in addition to the this there will be more progress made on the Mycenaean Chariot which is nearing completion and a few other smaller pieces too including the hammer wielding dwarf that can just be glimpsed behind the horse archers.

Lastly, a warm welcome to:
  • Piotr Nowacki
Hopefully, you will find something of interest in these pages.

Back to the Brushes 47

A variety of pictures of different items at different stages in painting. Firstly, there are some Gripping Beast Ulfhednar that will be gracing a table very soon as Berserkers in SAGA. Being a bit shy they won't show their faces and more just yet. Below them is the beginning of another stand of Hirdmen for Impetus.

The next picture is a "Little Viking" okay, he's a Northern Dwarf from Citadel with the heart of a Viking. To his right there is an out of focus PAK 38 and crew men that was completed last night and waits basing along with the Ulfhednar.

Changing periods now to WW2 with more 20mm SS artillery crewmen for a PAK 40 and PAK 43 from Skytrex.

Lastly,  the peltasts that were started right at the beginning of the Analogue Hobbies painting competition. These will be getting painted over the next few days along with most of the above including the fallen Mycenaean hero in a Dendra panpoly to their right.

Lastly, a warm welcome to both:

  • Russ Gibb
  • John
Hope that you both find something of use in these ramblings.

Cheers for now.

And Now for Something Completely Different 7

Well since the Hobbit has been released yesterday and I will be seeing it later on today, I thought what better than another Dwarf for today's post.

The above figure is another from the Citadel Northern Dwarf range. These are some of my personal favourites from this era. Great to paint and lots of character too; just what you need for small scale fantasy skirmish games like Songs of Blades and Heroes.

The pic below is a another Citadel Northern Dwarf that is still being worked on. This is one of three berserkers that are being painted for Songs of Blades and Heroes. On this one I have taken the red right hand theme that little bit further to add to feel of the warband.

Thats all for now and for those of you who are going to see the Hobbit over the next few days, enjoy!
