Progress on the last few figures for the veteran stand of Foederatii Allies for the Late Romans move on slowly. With only three figures to complete it is taking a surprising long time to finish the figures for varnishing and basing. Here are the most recent pictures of the stand as a whole:

All being well these figures will be completed over the weekend and further updates on other work in progress.

Back to the Brushes 28

Well, there was a fairly productive evening last night and the last few character figures for the Foederatii stand for the Late Romans have moved on a stage or two. The figures are from Gripping Beast's 6th/7th Century Germanic's range.

To assist these guys in the defence and pillaging of an Empire the following stand of Light Cavalry has been started. Again the figures are from Gripping Beast, this time from their Nomadic Huns range. Great figures with a huge amount of character.

Not sure about the colour of the flesh on these two figures, so they may get re-done over the weekend.

Lastly, every good Mycenean Hero needs some back up. These figures will suit this purpose wonderfully and as Light Foot in Impetus can support the Chariots with their pace and reasonable Impetus. Early stages at present as this is only the base coat of the flesh.

Back to the Brushes 27

Well hopefully things here are returning to some normality and some hobby time can be found. The car was dying and had to be replaced and as you can imagine its never as easy as that will do nicely. This has now been rectified and all is well.

July is rapidly drawing to an end and there has been very little to report. This should change over the weekend and there will be some pictures to show. This evening will be spent moving on with the foederatii for the Late Romans and something else, but more of that later.

There has been a far bit of reading happening here over the last few weeks and this is leading to a new project, but again, more of that later.

The Dance of Bronze

Well, there are things happening here, strange things. A first in fact as the Victrix Spartans are in the post. These figures hopefully will bulk out the remaining metals from Foundry and be the first venture in 28mm plastics. The picture below shows some painted examples of which most look useable, although there are some reservations on the musician and the officer type second from the top left with the half crested helm. Any way enough rambling and here is the picture:

Work continues on the Germanic Foederati for the Late Romans and other projects start in the dark corners of the mind. Hopefully there will be some painted figures to show soon.

Back to the Brushes 26

A few WIP pictures of various items that are on the painting table at present. Firstly, there are more foederati for the Late Romans. This base will represent a veteran or command stand in the allied troops  complete with priest, standard and raving dog. 

The figures are from Gripping Beast and the front three shields are all hand painted. Hopefully will manage to get a few more completed on this stand over the weekend.

Next up is another Impetus based project, this time the Late Romans in 10mm. These figures have been gathering dust since a failed Warmaster Ancients purchase and very nearly went on sale recently. They were saved from the auctions by a few nearby gamers playing Impetus in 15mm, so they are being slowly painted and based for Impetus on bases for 15mm games. The figures are from Pendraken and are surprisingly good to paint.

The last two pictures are of ongoing rebasing projects for Napoleonics for Age of Eagles and Shako and the English Civil War for Impetus Baroque. Slow progress is being made on both, with the English Civil War being nearest to completion.

The last post mentioned that there would be something a little different, well here it is the Late Roman army that is painted and based to date.  All of the original pictures had a lovely green cast to them undoubtedly due to operator error. Rather than waste the pictures and time taken they are all shown here in sepia to give the feel for the army as deployed.

The above two picture show the foederatii allies at present with at least another three units of heavy foot planned as well as between two and four stands of bow armed skirmishers. This will give a reasonable number of units for Impetus as well as enough for a Basic Impetus army too.

These pictures below show the main elements of the army with the heavy foot in six bases. Figures here are a mixture of Foundry and Gripping Beast.

The main battle line deployed with both archers in support and as skirmishers. There another two bases of archers in support planned for the main battle line.

Light cavalry covering the flank in depth. Here there are more bases than the army list would allow but all have been shown for aesthetics.

"On my mark, unleash hell," from the supporting scorpions and ballista units shown here with all the shooty death types in the one place.

Below are the four stands of the Menapii Seniores  with skirmishers to the front and rear. This was the planned visual effect for these units from the start.

Another unit of light foot, these have the same shield designs as two stands of heavy foot and if figures allow there will be a unit of skirmishers to match.

The first of the medium and heavy cavalry bases. The spear on the lead figure above broke off during taking these pictures. Thankfully this was the only casualty.

The pictures below show as much as possible the army fully deployed. This deployment is purely for the photographs but does show the army to its best.

As all the figures have been left step up as shown, if time permits over the next few days, hopefully there will be a few full colour pictures to show as well.
