Back to the Brushes 66

First pictures of the Sassanids are below.

Starting with the first stand of skirmishers for the army and on this occasion they are bow armed.

There is a third archer for this stand but this has not been painted yet.

Next up is one of the focal points of the army; that being an elephant with foot runners, although only the elephant and mahout are shown here. Having great fun painting this stand and the figures for it and may add a Late Roman casualty figure for effect too.

Thanks for looking

Imperium Sine Fine 13

Here at last is the Late Roman Camp for Impetus. The figures are from Foundry - foot, Gripping Beast - cavalry and shield stand and the tents are from Grand Manner. Not much else to say really so here are the pictures:

Overview of all three pieces together making the entire camp. The stand with the figures can really be place wherever with the two tents.

Some more detailed pictures of the figures for the sake of it. The shield stand includes two transfers from Little Big Men and one hand painted shield. The colours of the tunics reflect painted units from the full army and the cataphract cavalry man is also in the same colours as a stand of cataphracts from the full army.

Some detail of the tents themselves. These are robust resin models from Grand Manner and depict the trappings of a Imperial Roman camp.

Back to the Brushes 65

Its time for Project S to be opened up so all can view its progress so far. Before showing some pictures of the stands that are being painted at present here are some reference pictures that should make it clear what is being worked on the moment.

The pictures have been taken from the following web site Radpour where there are some great recreations of the period that Project S comes from.

So after these pictures Project S is clearly Sassanids. At this stage late period Sassanids, but the nature of the figures will mean that this army will cover all periods of the Sassanids as well as some of their earlier incarnations.

For the record the figures are again from Gripping Beast with the odd few from Aventine. The next post will show the progress on two mounted units and one skirmish unit.

Lastly a warm welcome to:

  • Grigork

Thanks for looking and cheers for now.

And Now for Something Completely Different 12

Another of the Dwarves for Songs of Blades and Heroes has been finished off this morning. An angry soul, who clearly has issues as you can see below:

The figure is from Citadel back when their models had character and were worthy of purchasing. Not a fan of the new examples of Dwarves from Games Workshop, but that is a personal opinion.

This figure almost completes the Dwarves of the Red Right Hand with only two still to paint. After these have been done its time for some of the Dwarves favourites, yes, thats right Elves.

Fury of the North 10

Here, at last, are the final two stands for the Basic Impetus Vikings. The figures are from Gripping Beast and the shield transfers from Little Big Men.

The vignette from Gripping Beast - 'Breaking the Widows Wall' has been used as the centre piece for this stand. In Basic Impetus this will represent the berserkers and in Impetus just another stand of Vikings.

Hopefully, these figures will show a sense of forward movement that was the inspiration of this stand. That and the breaking of the foes line as the warriors surge forward.

The next stand is a unit of Hirdmen and these are the back bone of both the basic Impetus and Impetus armies.

Shown here on their own with no support from behind.

With the weather being so good over the last few days here; it reached 27 degrees yesterday, there has not been much progress on the Huns and Project S. However,  might manage a bit more early doors tomorrow.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 64

Just a few quick pictures from last night's painting session. First the next three horse for the Huns, whilst not necessarily the best sculpts of horses there is something about these steppe ponies once fully painted.

Below are three horses for the first unit of heavy horse for Project S. There are going to be a lot of these in this army and a lot of colour too. Any thoughts yet? There will be more revealing pictures very soon.

Both sets of horse are from Gripping Beast.

Short and sweet tonight, but more to follow soon.

Back to the Brushes 63

Well, after almost three years in the painting off and on the Viking Basic Impetus army is now fully painted. Basing has already started and final pictures are to follow very shortly.

This clears the way for some more dedicated time to be spent on Project S; with the first stands including one stand of Skirmishers and one stand of Heavy Horse are on the table at present. Along side these is another stand of Hun Horse Archers just for the fun of it.

Yesterday saw a new project spring to light with the Divine Wind finally blasting through and a trade of Perry Samurai are now waiting to be painted. A few packs will be needed to push the army up to three hundred points but Claymore is just around the corner.

The detail on these figures is superb and a fair amount of research is going to be needed before any painting starts on them as well. Its all part of the fun of painting an army and here are some pictures from the Perry website

Thats all for today but there will be more very soon.

Cheers for now.

Half Year Round Up

Well 2013 is moving at a fair rate of knots at present. Hard to believe that its July already and for that matter nearly mid July.

In terms of painting 2013 has seen a few things completed:

  • A Four Point Viking Warband for SAGA
  • Ninjas for Songs of Blades and Heroes

Some projects are just never meant to be completed and 2013 has seen the following move on to pastures new:
  • WW1 in 6mm and 15mm. There is still the 20mm Late WW1 Germans to move on
  • WW2 in 15m; with the Late War SS Infantry company for Flames of War sold

So were does that leave everything else? Well here is the run down on the rough plan for the rest of the year:
  • Basic Impetus Vikings - 1 stand to complete
  • Impetus Vikings - 6 stands of Protected Foot to complete
  • Impetus Mycenaeans  - 1 Chariot and 7 stands of Infantry to complete
  • Impetus Late Romans - there is over 600 points worth of figures waiting on seeing a brush
  • Impetus Huns - 8 or 9 stands of Hunnish Cavalry to complete
  • Project S is fully prepped and ready for painting
  • Songs of Blades and Heroes - there are two warbands on going at present: The Red Dwarves and a standard Human Fantasy party.

Anything new planned? Well Dead Man's Hand has sparked a bit of interest so there is a nine figure gang to prep and paint.

How will it all go? Only time will tell but the Basic Impetus Vikings will definitely be finished this month and maybe a few figures for Songs of Blades and Heroes. A quite run into the end of the year then...

Lastly a warm welcome to:
  • Grimsby Mariner
  • 1/72 Figures Collect & Paint
Hope that you both find something interesting in these pages.
