Back to the Brushes 288

Last night was a good session at the painting table and the results are below:

These figures are from Foundry and are the sixth of nine such stands for the Marian/Caesarian army for DBA and ADLG that has slowly been progressing here. Based on 60mm fronts two stands together will be a standard sized unit in Hail Caesar as well so there is a bit of variety in alternative systems they will be usable for.

The shields were a pain and although they started with a Little Big Man transfers, the green Laurels above and below the boss just didn't show well enough. After playing about a bit with different positions and light decided that the best thing to do was over paint the shields to match the dark grey base. The results you see in front of you. To be honest, for the remaining figures it's looking very much like water slide transfers from VVV instead of the Little Big Men transfers.

One other thing that has been causing issues lately is using the camera in the phone. Next month going to go back to the digital camera so can do more with settings at taking the picture instead of editing afterwards. It's swings and roundabouts however it will be interesting to see what the end results will be.

So in terms of the 30 Day 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge these take the month's tally to:

3 x 20mm WW2 terrain pieces
2 x 28mm Norman Crossbowmen
8 x 28mm Prussian Landwehr
11 x 18mm Bavarian Grenadiers
8 x 28mm Caesarian Romans

For a running total of 32 with tonight still to paint for.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 287

Finished off the other five Prussian Landwehr the other night completing the first unit for the Napoleonic period ever.

The figures are from Warlord Games and paint well with enough detail to give interest and not too much to stifle motivation.

Next for these will be some command figures although this will be in next month looking at the calendar.

This takes the total for the month so far to 24 figures

3 x 20mm WW2 terrain pieces
2 x 28mm Norman Crossbowmen
8 x 28mm Prussian Landwehr
11 x 18mm Bavarian Grenadiers

Looking to finish a few more this evening to complete for Samhain.

Hope you found this interesting

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 286

This is something completely new and very different - the Seven Years War. A period of history that has passed by here until very recently when a trade was made for these Austrian Grenadiers from Eureka Miniatures.

SYW Bavarians - Herzog Regiment

The missing figure is the sergeant who is currently on the painting table in his whites.  The choice of colours comes from the Bavarian Herzog Regiment and other units will follow from this theme. A great source for information on this period - for those who like me know nothing - is Kronoskaf Project Seven Years War. Have found this to be a good resource so far although any recommend reads would be appreciated.

The basing is on 40mm fronts and this will allow the figures to be used in Black Powder or similar, along with Honours of War. The regiment flags arrived this morning although they are not strictly correct they will suit my needs.

As the Bavarian Auxiliary regiments were often understrength during this time the army will be smaller than other projects. This will suit both painting and gaming time, oh, wait, what is gaming time...

These 11 figures takes the monthly total to 19 figures with 3 days left on the challenge.

The running tally is

3 x 20mm WW2 terrain pieces
2 x 28mm Norman Crossbowmen
3 x 28mm Prussian Landwehr
11 x 18mm Bavarian Grenadiers

Hope that you found this interesting

The Sunne In Splendour 4

Started towards the beginning of this year and finally based last week, another command stand for the Lancastrians in Wars of the Roses for DBA and ADLG

Both figures are from Gladiator Miniatures and can't remember who the colours represent at the moment.

Will be picking up on this project in this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge assuming that it happens. Curt does have another project on his mind at present.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 285

The next completed figures for this month are from Warlord Games and are the beginning of the end. Napoleonics, the one period I vowed to never ever ever go near, and yet here we are.

These will be the first unit of eight for Sharpe Practice or two thirds of a twelve man unit for Black Powder. This evening will see another session on the next five who will hopefully be done by Samhain.

The bases and movement tray are all from Warbases and will facilitate play if and when these actually see a gaming table in the future.

So this takes the total this month to

3 x 20mm WW2 terrain pieces
2 x 28mm Norman Crossbowmen
3 x 28mm Prussian Landwehr

Still a few bits and pieces to get done by the witching hour this coming Saturday.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 284

That is another two Norman or Christian Spanish Crossbowmen ready for basing. Both figures are from Gripping Beast and at present can't decide whether to singly base the unarmoured figure or add him into a multi-figure stand.

Will probably go with the former as this figure is already on the stand.

This takes the monthly total to:

3 x 20mm WW2 terrain pieces
2 x 28mm Norman Crossbowmen

with a running total of 5 and 25 to go for the 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 283

Been building this watch post or road side shrine based on the blog of Wargaming with Silver Whistle and the fantastic book that has been published as a result of this blog: Setting the Scene Vol 2. Recommend both to anyone interested in building their own terrain and wargaming modelling in general.

Made from a 60mm round MDF base from Warbases, balsa wood, foam board and corrugated cardboard with grab adhesive and a fair bit of PVA :)

Texturing and painting next up after the last tiles are added on.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 282

A wee while has passed since the last post and a variety of things have been on and off the painting table.

Below are three finished terrain pieces set on 100 or 120mm hexes.

Originally intended for use on a 20mm version of Memoir 44 that hasn't yet happened.

These came pre-flocked and painted however, this has been redone when based on the hexes. The entire piece has been covered in a mix of static grass, fine clump foliage and fine sand.

Then rubberised horse hair was added and covered with medium and burnt green fine foliage and turf from Footpaths to create the bushes.

Once the PVA had dried the "flowers" were added by lightly covering set areas by brushing on PVA. Once dried the whole thing was sprayed with watered down PVA to seal everything in place.

These are the first three things completed for this 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 281

A few work in progress pics of what is currently getting some painting time.

The first pic is of Foundry Caesarian Romans and a Gripping Beast  Cornicen from their currently out of production Caesarian range.

More from Gripping Beast this time with Norman or Christian Spanish Crossbowmen for El Cid. The figure at the far left as viewed on screen is now complete.

Lastly there are the first of the Compagnie Franches de la Marine from the moulds of AW Miniatures and lurking at the very back are Warlord Games Prussian Landwehr. Three of the Landwehr are now finished.

The blues on the Marines have been done in two very different ways.

On the left, the blue has been painted with Citadel Contrast Ultramarines Blue and highlighted with Calgar blue and on the right with Foundry Napoleonic French blue triad in layers. The jury is still out on both colours and methods of painting and will trial the Contrast paint again on another two figures with a the wraith-bone under coat.

Hope that this has been of interest.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 280

A quick post on the progress of Warlord Games Prussian Landwehr. Good progress so far although finding the blue harder than thought. And to think it used to be red that that was the devil colour.

The base colour is Foundry Prussian Blue A which may be just too dark for the tone of Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue. Currently mixing these to create an intermediate tone. Whilst it is helping its also creating another layer that wasn't counted on.

The command figures are all metal and are good sculpts although the plastic troopers are offering better surfaces to paint. Who would have thought a stuck in the mud on metal figures would be saying that 😂

More to follow on these and some Caesarian Romans soon along with a murky figure or two...

Cheers for now

30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge September 2020

Last months 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge was successfully completed as below:

A very different month with a return to painting some terrain features for a range of periods from Ancients to WW2.

  • 4 x 20mm Resin Buildings from Hovels (Farm house and out buildings)
  • 1 x 28mm ruined Pillar fro Templar Miniatures
  • 1 x 28mm resin altar from Grand Manner
  • 1 x 15mm Haystack from Hovels

  • 1 x 20mm Flak 36 - lost the picture some how
  • 9 x 15mm Confederate Infantry from Old Glory
  • 12 x 28mm Iberian Spanish infantry from Gripping Beast

Started another 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge the other night, 2nd October. As with last month there will be no theme to this, just to paint and complete 30 miniatures regardless of their starting condition.

The outline of the challenge is detailed below, however the main point being to have fun with your hobby.

  • To paint 30 figures of all shapes and sizes in 30 days
  • The figures can be partly painted at the start as the main point is to complete figures that have been forgotten
  • Basing is not necessary to count as completed
  • Any scale is good
  • Too have fun
  • The end date is set by your start date - 31st October will be the end date of this challenge
  • To post updates as often as possible
  • Lastly to show a round up post with a group picture of everything.
Hope that you will find this interesting.
