Fantasy Hero 9

A couple of retro fighters from Citadel; both of which have recently appeared in the Analogue Painting Challenge.

First is Sir Cador Celestor a Lawful Knight from the early days of Citadel.

Below is Cedric who originally appeared in the third Citadel Compendium. Missed him then and caught up with him after a late night eBay purchase.

Kept the colour scheme on this figure simple as the pose of the figure does most of the work for him.

Both figures are hex based and Cedric below being a slotta based figure is on a plastic hex. Cador's base is like all other bases here from Warbases.

Below is a group shot of all four fighters together

Cheers for now

Blood and Souls for my Lord Arioch 6

Another two retro Chaos Warriors from Citadel that have recently been submitted in the Analogue Painting Challenge.

Had originally thought about changing the colour of the cloak on this Chaos Warrior, however, now that he is off the painting table the colour is starting to grow on me.

The sculpt on this figure has lost some of its detail over his thirty four years plus life span. A feeling that we can all relate to in some shape and form.

Next up is a variant figure from the Citadel Compendium 2 - a different helm and weapon are the main changes.

The mix of colours go well and glad that "Gilded" effect on the armour doesn't look too gaudy. Base colour was Foundry Brazen A, washed with a mix of Citadel Gryphonne Sepia and Army Painter Strong tone then highlighted with the base colour again.

Next up are some other fantasy figures to oppose the forces of Chaos.

Back to the Brushes 154

Some more work in progress as the Analogue Painting Challenge moves into its final weeks.

The Chaos Warrior and Lawful counter part above and below are now waiting on basing being completed.

The Skeleton Chariot moves closer to completion and has only the basing to finish now too.

Another Romano-Brit joins the fray to add to the Warlord stand for SAGA.

More to follow shortly

Back to the Brushes 153

Some work in progress pictures for this year's Painting Challenge

This one is now completed C01 fighter from Citadel.

Two groups of Hearth Guard for SAGA with figures from Gripping Beast's Romano British. Across this warband will be using a very limited colour scheme and Little Big Man's range of shield transfers to bring some more individuality to the figures. The movement base is from Warbases just along the road.

Top left in the picture above are the last of the 16 Undead waiting to be painted and below is the Warlord from the same warband featured above. For both Warlord and Hearthguard there will be mounted versions at some point soon.

More completed pictures to follow as soon as possible.

Cheers for now.

Fantasy Hero 8

The title should really be Heroine as the figure below is an Elfess, if such a word exists, but that would be too much like work - only joking. This figure is from the Citadel Compendium 2 released back in 1984 and along with others from the C08 High Elves were and are some of my favourite miniatures from this period.

To be retaken as face out of focus.

A great figure to paint and after some deliberation opted to paint the chest piece as a metallic breast plate with both steel and gold. The red and gold has worked well on this figure and although it will be difficult to see on these pictures the metal areas have all been lightly gloss varnished as well to lift the over all finish of the figure.

The basing shows some new oak leave foliage that was bought recently for use with this range of figures - yes there will be more later this year - and the leaves really are oak leaf shaped.

Added a few extra layers of tone to the flesh on this figure as felt it needed more depth in the flesh areas and was looking for a paler overall skin tone. The Foundry Expert flesh range was used to achieve the finished colour.

The red on the tunic ended up more red than its original base colour which was more burgundy in tone. The change isn't a bad thing just something noticed during the painting. Base colour was GW's Mechrite Red Foundation Layer and the next three layers were Foundry's Bright Red A, B and C to highlight.

Overall, very pleased with the finished look of this miniature and glad the extra time was spent on her to achieve the look wanted. Hope that you enjoyed the pictures.

Cheers for now.

Fantasy Hero 7

A recently completed Citadel Orc from sometime a go - not really sure on the age of this one.

Opted for a more grey-green than some of the very bright greens that are often used with Orcs. The base colour is from Foundry's poorly received World War II range of colours and is Soviet Winter Green shades through A to C

Another member of the Black shields, this orc has a plastic shield from the late eighties with no decoration. Not sure on this and it may change in the future if a good alternative can be found.

Some previous victims of the over-sized chopper hide behind the plastic shield, one in slightly better condition than the other although both have seen better days.

As with previous figures from this range have used militaristic colours rather than some of the more flamboyant colour schemes that are often seen. It is a matter of personal preference nothing more.

Another single figure to follow shortly along with some work in progress.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 152

A variety of pictures of work in progress at present as the Painting Challenge reaches its 6th week.

The painting table at present, from top left to bottom right:

  • Finished awaiting varnishing and photographing
  • Citadel C01 fighter
  • Foundry Peltasts
  • Various Citadel preslotta figures including the second solitary elf
  • Six groups of 15mm undead from Alternative Armies including a chariot and camp base with most to be primed this weekend

The window cill providing additional figures in the form of Dixon Ninjas, Gripping Beast Arthurians,  Redoubt Sea Peoples and Mycenaeans.

The undead move closer to seeing the table and those below await priming this weekend.

A camp base for Basic Impetus Fantasticus  comprising of figures from Alternative Armies and tomb stones from Essex.

A retro figures moves closer to completion and the first figure ever painted awaits repainting below. Originally this figure was painted in enamels and oils, changed days now although the oils are still here somewhere.

Below a Gripping Beast Arthurian is blocked to start a warband for SAGA with Romano Brits.
