Back to the Brushes 398

Something new, something old and something different.

Something new - SAGA: Age of Chivalry Hundred Years War from Perry Miniatures.

Something old - El Cid skirmishers in 28mm from Gripping Beast.

Something different - 25mm Dwarves for Kings of War including retro Citadel figures at the rear and Ral Partha in the fore; a glutton for punishment.

More to follow on these shortly.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 397

Some work in progress pictures for the Romano Brits in two scales.

Firstly, in 28mm Romano Brits from Gripping Beast to be used in SAGA and potentially Midgard; however that's a long long way away.

These figures are the start of two points worth of warriors, to join the original hearthguard painted in AHPC X back in 2020; and yes, they are very much a project that have been in limbo for a long time. The shield transfers are from Little Big Men.

The second scale is in 15mm and includes light and medium cavalry for the Romano Brits in ADLG.

The picture includes horses for two stands of light cavalry, three stands of medium cavalry and a command stand.

Lurking on the keyboard are figures from a newly started project in 28mm but more on them later in the week.

Cheers for now.

Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge XV

Winter has arrived and the prep for this year's Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is underway. Having joined the lists again I am needing to find 500 points of 2, 10, 15 and 28mm miniatures to paint between December 21st and March 21st.

Decisions are not always the easiest of things to make and can often change how the challenge runs. The initial running list includes:

  • 2mm Punic Wars
  • 10mm DAK for O Group
  • 15mm Romano Brits for ADLG
  • 15mm Samurai
  • 28mm Romano Brits for SAGA
  • 28mm Dwarves for Kings of War
  • 28mm Hundred Years War for SAGA
  • 28mm Christian Spanish

There are more options, however, I'm looking to finalise a set list and point values from the above with a schedule to ensure that there is time to complete sections across the Challenge and to keep things interesting throughout.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 386

It's been far from quiet here at Bases and Brushes; holidays, birthdays, shows and the daily humdrum of modern life has meant that there just hasn't been a moment to sit in peace and paint a wee man or two.

Can't comment for others but painting, gaming and the hobby in general is often a release from the constant stream of distractions this digital age offers. Ironic, considering this post is a part of this digital age.

A place to sit for a while, to calm the mind and silence the barking black dogs and insidious whispering voices in your mind. A place to focus and draw on your creativity to summon peace and still your mind and do some colouring in.

Under coat, base coat, under painting, toning, layering, shading, stippling, dry brushing, washes, and glazes are all parts of the process, parts that when brought together make a whole and worthwhile past time.

Given that space and time it's possible to do this

Gripping Beast Carthaginian Libyan spearmen veterans for SAGA.

A few more hearth guards added in.

Shield transfers from Little Big Men.

The start of a bigger unit of Hannibal's veteran spearmen. Figures again from Gripping Beast.

Base coat on for the flesh colour.

The next point of hearth guard are on the painting table as well.

Peace and time well spent.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 375

It's been a few months since the last work in progress pic, so here's something in line with the Orctober theme:

First up is Eeza Ugezod, who will be used as a sub-commander for SAGA: Age of Magic. There are troopers to follow for this Regiment of Renown

The small gent to the left of the above pic is Khurma the Fleshripper; who will be the Warlord of Age of Magic Warband. The figure to the left is a puny human from Foundry's Late Roman range for scale comparison.

These will also be used in a variety of other fantasy skirmish games.

Hope to post more shortly.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 373

Sat last night and continued colouring in these two Hearth Guard minis for the Moorish Warband.

Gripping Beast figures with their older style of horses that don't depict the pride of Andalusian horse flesh that well.

Have opted for darker shields for the Hearth Guard so the small details jump out in various hues of yellow.

After that, there is only a few bits of equipment to finish on this pair before moving on to the next two.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 372

Continuing on with the theme of El Cid and with a nod to Dean's superb WAB Corner blog I am picking up on a Moorish Warband for SAGA.

Original started prior to the pandemic, this project stuttered out early in 2020 leaving the Warlord and his Hearth Guard to finish for either a four or six point warband.

Every warband in SAGA has a Warlord and above is a work in progress pic of the Moorish Warlord from Gripping Beast.

A single piece miniature, well sculpted and cast has been enjoyable to paint.

Unlike the rest of the warband, I've used brighter colours - yellows to be precise - for the majority of the clothing on this character. A theme that will carry on to the Hearth Guard unit to follow shortly.

Hope that this has been of interest to you.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 353

A few of items currently on the painting table at present.

The second part of Black Guard spearmen for Almorahads in ADLG with first two stands very nearly finished.

A unit of medium Turkopol cavalry for the Late Crusaders in ADLG

A classic figure from Citadel Miniatures back in the day; a Viking from the Kremlo scenario

The start of the first unit for Republican Romans in SAGA: Age of Hannibal. Figures from Gripping Beast.

Some completed figures to follow shortly.

Cheers for now.

A little bit of miniature Bingo

This was passed on to me from a friend who also blogs and games as a bit of fun.

A simple little way to motivate yourself for painting in the new year:  Roll 2D5 and use the first for rows and the second for columns.

Have fun painting  as I am now changing the painting order on the Carthaginian warband for SAGA to the newest purchase rather than the most likely to be used. Will have one figures finished for Tuesday not all twelve of the levy unit.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 333

The AHPC XII is now in full swing and the entries are being posted by various challengers. Have started a few threads for this now. The pic below shows the variety in periods that are being worked on just now.

Clockwise from the top left corner:
  • Carthaginians in 28mm for SAGA
  • Crusaders in 15mm for ADLG
  • Hoplites in 15mm for DBA
  • Sargonid Assyrians in 15mm for DBA
  • Figures started before the AHPC began earlier this week
  • Skeletons in 28mm for Fantasy skirmish
  • Early Imperial Romans in 15mm for ADLG
  • Fallschirmjager in 28mm for Chain of Command
A lot of there to keep the painting mojo going and some are parts of previously started projects whilst others are starting afresh for this challenge.

More detail to follow shortly.

Stay safe and cheers for now

Reconquista 9

Finished these off the other evening and that completes the 1st point of Levy for the Moors in SAGA. The other six to follow when the daylight allows for some better pictures. There was clouds and sleet here earlier, so not the best natural lighting for photographing figures painted in tones of black.

The figures are from Gripping Beast and have been a pleasure to paint up and will be moving on with the second point of levy being the crossbowmen.

This will take the warband to the following 6 point list:

  • Warlord
  • 4 Mounted Hearthguards
  • 8 Warriors
  • 8 Warriors
  • 8 Warriors
  • 12 Levy with bows
  • 12 Levy with crossbows

After that the decision will be whether or not to include the Legendary Black Guard for a an 8 point warband or another unit of Hearthguard and Mounted Warriors. The Black Guard being the cheaper option as the figures are already here, the other two units might mean hunting through the lead mountain before purchasing yet more unnecessary new shiney. Decisions decisions...

Hope that this is of interest to you and your painting plans within plans are moving on well too.

Stay safe and cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 332

Will be starting another 30 Day Painting Challenge this evening although there will be a slight difference in this months Challenge:

The difference being that the AHPC XII starts on the 21st December and from then on it's only miniatures that are prepped only - none already started.

Prepping has been started and to be honest there is always enough on the sidelines to be starting with. First up will be some 15mm and 28mm being

  • Sargonid Assyrians for DBA
  • Carthaginians for SAGA
  • Wood Elf Regiment of Renown for Oathmark
  • Skeleton Warriors for Oathmark
  • With various units to follow that will continue on with started projects from the last couple of years.

As always for the 30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge there is no theme to this, just to paint and complete 30 miniatures regardless of their starting condition or size.

The outline of the challenge is detailed below, however the main point being to have fun with your hobby.

  • To paint 30 (As Many as You Can month) figures of all shapes and sizes in 30 days
  • The figures can be partly painted at the start as the main point is to complete figures that have been forgotten
  • Basing is not necessary to count as completed
  • Any scale is good
  • Too have fun
  • The end date is set by your start date - 21st December will be the end date of this challenge
  • To post updates as often as possible
  • Lastly to show a roundup post with a group picture of everything.

The Round up post for November 2021 will follow tomorrow or the day after.

Hope that you will find this interesting.

Cheers for now

Fury of the North 27

A quick update on the very slow process being made on the Foundry Norman's as these two are finally based and finished for use.

Looking forward to completing more in the coming months.

Originally started for WAB as mercenaries, these will also be used in Lion Rampant and SAGA in a variety of roles.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 331

The last of the Moorish Archers are now finished just waiting on being varnished - and correcting the eye on the leftmost figure.

The figures are from the venerable Gripping Beast range of Moors and still firm favourites here. Will be posting some group pictures of all of this unit shortly whilst looking to arrange a game to send them to the lions as all newly painted figures are bound to go.

The dark sleeves and turbans were painting in black contrast paint then highlighted as required. The jury is out on these paints at present although the sleeves have worked very well.

Based on 25mm rounds from Warbases for skirmish gaming in general.

This takes the tally for this month to:

2 x 15mm Infantry

3 x 28mm Infantry

Still a fair amount to complete for the end of the month and then time will be focussing on a different challenge for the dark nights in the new year.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 328

A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that it is the year 2021 and the known universe is ruled by...

Well, the strongest obviously and this is the start of an Undead warband for Oathmark, SAGA: Age of Magic and just general fantasy gaming.

Will be posting a few progressive shots of these showing the use of "contrast paints" once the figures are all painted. For this subject they are working really well.

Will need a few round cornered bases for these and their collection of bony friends. Warbases will be just the ticket for these.

Cheers for now and stay safe.

Back to the Brushes 327

Since it's October and the Battle of Hastings was in October here are few Normans of very different sizes.

First up, is a Norman Milite from Gripping Beast that has been waiting a few brush strokes to finish him off. Another versatile figure range that can be morphed into El Cid Spanish and 1st Crusaders and early Feudals as well. This figure is part of a Hearthguard unit for SAGA and other skirmish games as well as the possibility of WAB at smaller point games.

Next are two stands of missile troops for a Norman DBA army in 6mn. Crossbows to the left and archers to the right. The base sizes are the sames as would be used for 15mm figures just a few more figures per base. The first units of spearmen are on the painting table just now but most likely to be next month before they are here.

The same versatility will be available with these figures once finished and they'll see a fair bit of use in the future.

This takes this month's tally to:

6 x 28 mm infantry
1 x 28mm cavalry
12 x 6mm infantry figures

Getting there and the 6mm figures are a bit cheeky but still count.

Hope you found this interesting

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 326

The next batch of painted Moorish archers are below; figures from Gripping Beast's Moors range.

The brighter colours used here are to reflect an Andalusian influence whilst the stark contrast below with the black for more of a Moorish feel. Both are purely artistic licence

A versatile range of figures that will see use in both SAGA: Age of Crusades and Lion Rampant and possibly a few other skirmish styled games as well.

This takes the tally this month so far to:

6 x 28mm Infantry

Still a fair bit to go but there is a lot in the side lines at present.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Back to the Brushes 325

Still working on these two buildings from Warbases. The walls are textured, base coated and washed ready for the layering to finish and the tiles - where applied and base coated are ready for drybrushing and weathering.

Window frames and woodwork still to be worked on and then there is the front porch - to flagstone or not to flagstone?

A lot of potential for gaming in 28mm with these kits as the roofs lift off but more on that later.

The next posts will show other progress on figures and such stuff.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 324

More Moorish archers for SAGA today and getting near to the final paint session with both groups. The figures are from Gripping Beast and still hold up well considering their age.

Starting to get the jist of Contrast paints and seeing a lot of potential with them for certain things especially as using as glaze to bring colours together.

Still to complete any figures or terrain this month but there are a lot of items on the painting table. That's part of the problem, needing to focus more on a single element and get it done rather than butterflying around from one shiney to the next shiney.

Hope that you found this interesting and stay safe.

Cheers for now

Imperium Sine Fine 31

A recently completed scenery piece from the Warbases Veni Vidi Vici range in 28mm - the Stone Granary.

Stone Granary

A range of paints were used on this from masonry paint, emulsion, artists acrylics and modellers acrylics to achieve different colours and finishes different than normally used.

A scenery piece like this really sets off your gaming table and this range are superb kits with a huge range of potentials and not just for gaming but in different painting styles and conversion opportunities.

With painting buildings, I have always thought that texture is everything. The dimensions of the model carry themselves well, however, texture allows colours to be built up in layers much easier than plain surfaces.

A painted or plastered wall is seldom just the one colour - go take a walk and look at the differences in painted buildings. Age, weather, condition are all contributing factors that change the colour and some of this is shown on this building, more will be shown on another future project where weathering will be added in.

Really enjoyed painting this and will be looking forward to doing more from the same range in the coming months. This takes the tally this month to 2 finished items so far with 4 painting sessions still to go...

Cheers for now and stay safe.
