30 Days 30 Miniatures Painting Challenge - May 2021 Round up

May passed by in a flash leaving this 30 Days 30 Miniatures six figures short of the finish line. To say that there was a lot going on is an understatement however, that's passed now and its time to rise from the metaphorical ashes.

The pictures below show a mix of both scales and periods; starting with a few more terrain pieces for 28mm WW2. No idea who the manufacturer is for these which is a pity as rather like the single man sandbag emplacements.

The greying hut is from Hovel's ACW range although it could be used for any North American conflict from the French Indian War onwards. This is a part of a small farm set with the barn being the next piece to be painted.

Whilst this month, as in May, there have been no 28mm figures completed a few have been getting worked on in the sidelines. This leaves the 15mm figures from Museum Miniatures and Gladiator Games.

The Mongols from Museum Miniatures are the first completed figures for well, Mongol armies across the period of the Mongol Empire. Starting here with the first bow armed light cavalry and medium cavarly.

Next is the start of a second DBA army for the Late Crusader period and instead of representing a famous or infamous military order this time the figures are being painted for the Knights of Jerusalem.

Still to find suitable decals for the shields etc for this army; not sure if there is a cross surround by 4 other crosses out there. If not will have to compromise with just the one.

Although May and for that matter June have passed in a whirlwind did manage to complete 24 different miniatures.  Not close to that figure for June yet.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 309

Oh my God! Where did May disappear to?

Just as well that there a few things painted for this month's challenge as there are only five days left of the month to complete. A quick pic that is poorly composed and not clearly focussed either; the shame!

From left to right there are

  • 2 x 28mm single man sand bagged terrain features for WW2
  • 7 x 15mm Gladiator Games Crusader crossbowmen
  • 1 x 15mm Chicken shed from Hovels
  • 1 x 28mm Dragon's teeth terrain feature for WW2

This give a running total of 11 miniatures painted from 30.

Best get a move on and get the brushes out

Stay safe

Back to the Brushes 277

Continue the theme from the last post here are several more finished terrain pieces.

First up is a haystack English Civil War style from Hovells in 15mm.

Next, a shrine or altar piece from Grand Manner purchased when you could get bare resin from them.

The next two pictures are of a 15mm farm house for American Civil War based games. This is also from Hovells in 15mm.

The final piece is again from Hovells, this time from their 20mm Battlefield range and is a doocot from the farmhouse set, which will follow shortly. Whilst sold for use in WW2 based games, this piece and the others in the set could easily be used for earlier conflicts as well.

This takes this month's 30 days 30 miniatures painting challenge to

Day 19: 4 resin terrain pieces, for a running to total of 6 finished figures.

Hope that you found this interesting.

Cheers for now.

Losing that gaming mojo 3

Hoping to have another game of Chain of Command soon and this time will be looking at movement and shooting with more detail.

Have noticed that in WW2 gaming the scenery is as important if not more so than the actual figures as it really does determine the battlefield in this scale. Movement between and to terrain features is key to staying alive in this game as cover is a great aid to surviving and achieving objectives.

Some pictures of the terrain features that have been dug out of the attic to be used in Chain of Command that were thought to have been painted. Oh, how wrong as only the base coat had been laid down.

Above show the brickwork dry brushed with Foundry Brick Red A, B & C. The rendering has been wet brushed in Foundry Stone A & B and will be dry brushed with C from the same triad. Tiles at this point base coated in Foundry Slate Grey A waiting to be dry brushed

Below is a partner piece to the above from Hovels and has only been base coated with Homebase's exterior paint Bitter Chocolate Brown. This has been the go to base coat for all scenery and buildings for myself for years, sadly not sure it's still available.

More to follow soon

Back to the Brushes 130

Some quick work in progress pictures starting with the Vikings moving ever slowly forward. The other two are having a well earnt break.

Next a few scenery pieces from Hovels in 25mm, these are versatile bits that will see use in a variety of small scale games once finished.

Lastly, a Ranger from the Citadel Talisman range circa 1986/87; that is so very nearly finished.

More work in progress to follow shortly

Dead Man's Hand 7

A few scenery pieces that have been completed lately for use in a variety of skirmish games including Dead Man's Hand, Songs of Blades and Heroes, SAGA and anything else that suits.

All of these are from Hovels and are 25/28mm in scale.

Some work in progress pictures to follow shortly.

Back to the Brushes 87

Pictured below is the start of another two points worth of Vikings for SAGA. This will complete the warband unless a levy unit is added in the future. Shown here are two figures from another Hird unit and one from another Bondi - he is on the left as you view this.

The figures are all from Gripping Beast and are painting up well so far. All of the Vikings used in SAGA are on twenty millimetre square bases as this allows them to be used in sabots for Impetus. More of these to follow shortly.

Above shows another two resin pieces of scenery from Hovels for Dead Man's Hand. Quick and easy to paint and suitable for a good many skirmish games.

A warm welcome to two new followers:
  • Ronin Rumbler
  • Whisperin Al
Hope that you both find something of interest in these ramblings.

Next up is the start of something a little bit different. A personal challenge so to speak however; this will be fully explained in the next post.

Cheers for now.

Dead Man's Hand 5

Pictured below are a few small scenery bases that have been completed along side the previously shown Lawmen. The scenery pieces are resin casts from Hovels and have been lying in the attic for a good few years.

They were originally bought to be used for Mordheim or other similar skirmish games and are perfect for Dead Man's Hand.

There will be a few more to follow over the next few months.

Cheers for now
