Back to the Brushes 69

Just a few pictures showing some progress on the Sassanids and a base of Huns that is cluttering the painting table at present. Firstly the elephant for the Sassanids shown here with and without crew in the howdah.

Its starting to take shape as finished model and the next decision to make for this figure is whether or not to included foot runners on the final stand. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Next up is the next stand of Huns that will be used for allies with the Late Romans and as a part of a Hun army in its own right. As with the elephant above still very much a work in progress, however these are also starting to take shape a unit.

Over the next few weeks there will be a concentrated effort to get both of these stands and a few other loose ends finished and the painting table cleared for the Sassanids. Unfortunately, this means a lot of horses - not the favourite for painting. Fortunately, there are a lot of armoured horses too. Suppose you can't have everything.

Lastly, a warm welcome to some new followers:

Back to the Brushes 68

The next few pictures of the Sassanids as work progresses. Quite a bit of spare time coming up over the next few weeks so hopefully will get a good few painting sessions in and some fair progress on these guys.

These are the crew from the first elephant that will be the centre piece of the Sassanid army. At three hundred points in Impetus there will be only one but in larger games this can increase.

Persian Fire

Here are the pictures of the first completed stand for the Sassanid Persian army for Impetus. The title relates to Tom Holland's Persian Fire  - a book worth reading if you haven't already - which covers the rise of the Persian Empire and the Greek Wars. Anyway enough babbling, here are the pictures.

As has been mentioned previously the approach to basing has been changed for this army. Here the base is painted with GW Graveyard Earth, then dry brushed with GW Desert Yellow, Kommando Khaki and finally with Vallejo Iraqi Sand. The flock is Galeforce Straw with Silfur Late Summer Tufts. This gives a good arid feel to the bases which was what was desired.

Work continues on the next two stands with pictures to follow shortly.

The Gathering 2013 - An Impetus Competition 3

Pictures from the third and final round are below:

The Assyrians above fight it out with the Yuan Chinese below. However, this time they fail to win the day and the competition and are routed by the Chinese.

Below a rematch of an early clash at Antonine's Folly early this year in Grangemouth with Eastern Late Imperial Romans versus the Almoravids. This time the game was a draw evening the scores up a little from last time.

The last picture of the day came from the Patrician Romans versus the Lancastrian WOTR army. Here again the game resulted in a draw.

Overall the feedback from the day's gaming so far has been very positive and one person has said that the Gathering has restored his faith that Impetus competitions can actually be fun!

Thanks for looking and cheers for now.

The Gathering 2013 - An Impetus Competition 2

Pictures from Rounds Two are below

The Patrician Romans above prepare to hold the woods against the Almoravids that await them across the table shown below. A hard fought draw was the outcome of this particular game.

Below the Lancastrians await the Norman Heavy Cavalry with the game resulting in a rout to the Normans.

The Ottoman Turks on the left take on and are routed by the Early Feudal English below.

Above the Hundred Year War English tackle their historical counter parts the Ancient Britons below. The game resulted in a draw.

Round three to follow shortly.

Cheers for now

The Gathering 2013 - An Impetus Competition

Sunday 11th August 2013 saw Dunfermline Wargames Club host their second 28mm Impetus competition. With twelve entries ranging from Middle Assyrians to Ottoman Turks there was going to be a lot of challenging and entertaining games. So, what happened throughout the day? Well there was laughter, head shaking, dice rolling, draws and routs. Basically everything you would expect from an Impetus competition. So on to the results, and there was a surprise in a Scottish competition, this being a new name in first place:

1. Frazer Watson: Yuan Chinese 329 pts
2. Dax Robertson: Middle Assyrians 279 pts
3. David Burns: Normans 264 pts
4. Justin Marshall: Ottoman Turks 207 pts
5. Russ Gibson: Sui Dynasty Chinese 162 pts
6. Ross Manning: Patrician Romans 155 pts
7. Dave Knight; Early Feudal English 154 pts
8. Richard Coats: Almoravids 132 pts
9. Martin Murray: Lancastrian WOTR 126 pts
10. Mark Learmonth: Ancient Britons 92 pts
11. Richard Bryan: Hundred Year War English 83 pts
12. Marco Grillanda: Eastern Late Imperial Romans 79 pts

Overall everybody had a great day and as organiser and player there are less close up pictures of the tables but a good few of the various games from all three rounds. The pictures below all come from round one.

The Yuan Chinese deploy against the Early Feudal English.

Ancient Britons above and their adversaries below the Middle Assyrians. This game resulted in the Ancient Britons being routed by the Assyrians.

The forces clash with the Yuan Chinese versus Feudal English above and Hundred Year War English versus the Lancastrian WOTR below. The Yuan Chinese routed the Early Feudal English and the Lancastrian's had the advantage in points in a hard fought draw with the Hundred Year War English.

Below East meets East with Sui Chinese versus Eastern Late Imperial Romans. The Sui Chinese again routing the Late Romans

As there were a few new players to Impetus at this years Gathering a few of the armies are still being painted. As its a relaxed atmosphere there was no problem with this on the day.

Pictures from Rounds Two and Three to follow shortly.

Cheers for now

Back to the Brushes 67

The last session of painting saw some brush work on a couple of character figures for two very different games. The first a Warband leader for Saxons in Dux Brittanniarum. The figure is from Musketeer Miniatures and was one of those figures that just had to be bought. There are currently two versions being painted, one of which is for something just that little bit different, but more of that when it is complete.

Also some time has been set aside for the first of the Elves for Songs of Blades and Heroes. This figure is again an old Citadel figure from the early eighties, sculpted by Aly Morrison if memory serves correctly. These retro figures are perfect for skirmish games such as Songs of Blades and Heroes and this one may also see some action in a newly started The One Ring rpg game.

The first stand of the Sassanids is now also completed and is being based at present. Will be using a slightly different approach with the basing for this army and not using ink washes on the textured base prior to dry brushing. More will be explained by the pictures of the stand when completed.
